Public Art

ConnectEast’s public artwork program represents the largest commitment to public art on a major road in Australia and complements the already high standard of urban design achieved on EastLink.
Four Australian artists were chosen to create the major artworks:
- Elipsoidal Freeway Sculpture by James Angus (pictured second from bottom right) – Located next to EastLink between Wellington Rd and Corhanwarrabul Creek, the sculpture comprises 24 green, blue and white coloured modular ellipsoids varying from 1-3 metres in diameter and up to 5 metres in height, covering a distance of 36 metres.
- Public Art Strategy by Emily Floyd (pictured top right) – Located next to EastLink between Cheltenham Road and the Dandenong Bypass, the 13 metre high, 19 metre long panted steel sculpture depicts a giant blackbird with a wing span of 7.5 metres, overlooking a yellow worm.
- Hotel by Callum Morton (pictured bottom right) – Located next to EastLink between Greens Road and Bangholme road, Hotel is a large scale model of a high
rise hotel comprising a steel structural frame with concrete and glass panels, standing 20 metres high, 12 metres long and 5 metres wide. Some of its windows will be lit at night with solar power.
- Desiring Machine by Simeon Nelson (pictured second from top right) – Located next to EastLink south of Thompson Road, near Boundary-Colman’s Road, Desiring Machine, resembles a fallen tree or tower and is made from galvanized steel plate. It stretches its branches 36 metres along the side of the motorway.
In addition to the major artworks, ConnectEast also funded a $1 million collection of smaller scale pieces located along the EastLink Trail for the enjoyment of cyclists and walkers.
