Environmental Management
Protection of the environment was an integral part of designing and building EastLink and significant effort has been devoted to achieving the best possible outcomes.
We operate a comprehensive Environmental Management Plan (EMP) for the construction and operations phases of the project. The Construction EMP was reviewed as adequate by State and Commonwealth authorities. It is this EMP that was audited by the project's Environmental Management Representative and the Independent Reviewer throughout construction and determined the procedures which needed to be complied with by our construction contractor, Thiess John Holland, and its sub-contractors.
Construction Phase
The EMP covered the following elements of construction:
- Air quality, noise and vibration management
- Archaeological and cultural heritage management
- Erosion and sediment control
- Flora and fauna management
- Soil and water management
- Weed and waste management.
The Environment Protection Authority (EPA) maintains the day-to-day regulatory role in all pollution aspects of the project. The Commonwealth Government’s Department of Environment, Water and Heritage also maintains a watching brief on the southern part of the project through its legislation that protects nationally and internationally endangered species.
