ConnectEast

EastLink Trail

The Eastlink Trail was built as part of EastLink, the 39 kilometre motorway serving the communities and businesses of Melbourne’s eastern and south-eastern suburbs. The Trail features 35 kilometres of bicycle and walking tracks as well as connections to many existing bicycle paths adjacent to the roadway. It represents a $26 million investment in the community by ConnectEast, the owner and operator of EastLink.

Starting just east of Mitcham Road in Donvale, the three metre wide concrete path winds its way through the Mullum Mullum Valley and heads south connecting to the Dandenong Creek Trail before crossing Greens Road in Melbourne’s south-east.

The EastLink Trail links cyclists and pedestrians to the extensive network of pathways that extend from Seaford to the city, taking in many different types of environment, including wetlands, parklands, creeks and natural bush settings. Recreational walking, jogging and cycling opportunities have been enhanced in east and south-east region of Melbourne, as has the community’s ability to enjoy open parkland and reserve areas.

There are many attractions along the way available to walkers and cyclists:

  • The Mullum Mullum Valley with its unique plant and animal life
  • Around 60 wetland areas including Oakwood Park in Noble Park North
  • Some of Melbourne’s largest and most interesting parks, including Jells Park and Koomba Park
  • Connections to the Dandenong Creek Trail and the Port Phillip Bay Trail network

  • Sculptural artworks situated along the Trail as part of the $5.5 million ‘EastLink Collection’

Share the Paths

The EastLink Trail is a shared path which means that it is used by a range of people, including walkers, runners, in-line skaters, dog walkers, people with prams and bike riders. At three metres wide for most of its way, the EastLink Trail is wide enough to share. It is recommended that users observe the following path etiquette:

  • Cyclists should always ride to the path conditions – both weather and geographical
  • Wheeled traffic gives way to foot traffic
  • Pedestrians and riders should keep left unless overtaking (overtake on the right)
  • Riders should travel at a safe speed which allows them to stop quickly
  • Riders should slow down and ring their bell when approaching other users
  • Let others behind or in front know when slowing or about to stop
  • Riders should always have front and rear lights at night
  • Pedestrians should wear light coloured clothing so they can be seen more easily
  • Riders should take extra care on the Trail bridges; non-slip coating has been applied but they can still be slippery
  • Dogs must be kept on a leash while on the path

By practising good and considerate behaviour, the EastLink Trail can be enjoyed by everyone.
